Turns out, we weren\u2019t too bad at it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 15, I\u2019d upgraded my side hustle. A friend and I would head up to London on weekends, scouting wholesale warehouses for things we could flip at school\u2014watches, novelty lighters, key rings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lighters were a big hit\u2026 until some kid set a school bus seat on fire. Lucky for us, he didn\u2019t snitch on where he got it from! That small project spiraled into a full-blown side hustle, building websites for local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when I got hooked on SEO. I spent months figuring out how to rank my own site on Google and, after plenty of trial and error, I cracked the code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I then dabbled in Amazon selling, eBay, and dropshipping with Shopify, but none of them really clicked for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Discovering_Affiliate_Marketing\"><\/span>Discovering Affiliate Marketing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I discovered affiliate marketing in 2013 and was immediately hooked on the idea of building &#8220;passive income&#8221; selling other people\u2019s products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I believe affiliate marketing is one of the best business models around, especially for beginners. It has a low barrier to entry and it&#8217;s a solid business anyone with a bit of dedication can run in their spare time. And with a lot of focus and hard work, you can build a job-replacing income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it&#8217;s not easy, like many &#8220;guru&#8217;s&#8221; would have you believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To say I had fast success as an affiliate would be a total lie. In fact, it was quite the opposite for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I made a lot of mistakes in the early days and so, it took me a long while before I was making decent money. In fact, it took me several years to make a job-replacing income, but I did it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problem was, I was trying to learn through free content online, and I was listening to too many people with different opinions and strategies. While there is absolutely a ton of great info out there online, the problem is;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s hard in the beginning, to know who is legit and who is fake until you have some experience yourself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you end up listening to too many different people you&#8217;ll likely just go round in circles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No one reveals everything they\u2019re doing to make money online for free<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most people need a clear and detailed blueprint to follow in the early days (myself included)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Once I realised this, I decided to invest in a solid course that could help me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I was only having minimal success with affiliate marketing in the early days I decided to learn more about SEO and focus most of my energy on predictably ranking websites on Google to drive traffic. My plan was to build WordPress blogs and use them to promote affiliate products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I joined a couple of courses, but only got a few nuggets of good info from them. Finally, I decided if I was to do this properly then I should invest in my education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I joined a very expensive SEO course and learned loads of great tactics, but most of the emphasis was on local SEO and building an agency. Since I needed to build an online income quickly I decided to start an SEO agency while working on my affiliate business part-time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SIDE NOTE:<\/strong> The above does not mean that you also need to join a very expensive course to have success online. I actually spent way more money than I should have done on courses over the years. While it is very difficult (not impossible) to make good money online without any help from anyone, you don\u2019t need to spend a fortune on courses to have success either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_SEO_Agency_That_Burned_Me_Out\"><\/span><strong>The SEO Agency That Burned Me Out<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, I started an SEO agency, helping local businesses rank on Google. It was great money, but after a few years, I found myself juggling 16-hour workdays between my agency, affiliate business, and therapy practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2017, I hit burnout. I knew I needed a business model that didn\u2019t trap me in the same 9-to-5 grind. So, I shut down the agency and went all-in on affiliate marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By then, I was consistently making around $5K per month in affiliate commissions, and things were finally falling into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_It_All_Came_Crashing_Down%E2%80%A6\"><\/span><strong>When It All Came Crashing Down\u2026<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as I thought I\u2019d cracked the code, Google\u2019s \u201cFred\u201d update hit in early 2017. My main affiliate site tanked, and along with it, most of my income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lesson learned:<\/strong> Build on solid ground. Going forward, I focused on long-term, sustainable online businesses instead of relying on Google\u2019s ever-changing algorithms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, I\u2019ve rebuilt my affiliate business the right way, and now I\u2019m expanding into creating my own digital products to complement my income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How I Create Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All the content on <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurnut.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Entrepreneur Nut<\/a> is planned, written, or edited by me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I do use freelance writers for some articles, nothing goes live without my approval.
